What is BPH?
BPH stands for "benign prostatic hyperplasia," also referred to as prostate gland enlargement. This non-cancerous condition occurs in men when the prostate gland grows larger, which can also be called benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP or BPE), adenofibromyomatous hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or benign prostatic obstruction.
As the prostate enlarges, it exerts pressure on the urethra, leading to its constriction. This can cause the bladder wall to thicken and the bladder to weaken, potentially resulting in difficulty emptying it completely. The narrowing of the urethra and incomplete bladder emptying (known as urinary retention) are responsible for many of the symptoms associated with BPH.

New Paragraph
Are you at risk?
While there is currently no known way to prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), certain factors can increase your risk of developing an enlarged prostate:
- Aging: BPH is the most common prostate issue for men over the age of 50.
- Family History: A family history of prostate problems, particularly if your father or brother had BPH, raises your risk.
- Medical Conditions: Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and circulatory disorders can also increase your risk.
- Lifestyle: Obesity raises your risk, while regular physical activity can reduce it.
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Recent studies suggest a link between ED and an increased risk of BPH.
